荷兰乌得勒支市 Utrecht, the Netherlands

View from the top of Domtoren bell tower, Utrecht. Utrecht is an ecclesiastical centre, as the seat of the Catholic primate of the Netherlands, a university town, a commercial centre well-known for its trade fair, and an important communication network junction.

Utrecht old town. Narrow, spanned by numerous bridges, this old canal which crosses the town from one end to the other, originally linked the Rhine to the Vecht. It is one of the city's animated centres, both on the upper quays and the lower quays, which are lined with shops and restaurants.

The most memorable things in Utrecht are bicycles, tree-lined canals and restaurants.

University of Utrecht (Universiteit Utrecht) building. Built at the end of the 19C in the neo-Renaissance style, it incorporates the cathedral's old chapterhouse (1409), the present great lecture hall or Aula. Lu says this is where all Ph.D. students defend their thesis work.

Utrecht Domtoren. This bell tower was formaly linked by an arch to the nave of the cathedral, which was destroyed in 1674, by a hurricane, which also devastated the town. Built in 1321-82 in the Gothic style, restored at the beginning of this century, it influenced many other bell towers in the country, of which it is the highest.

Kloostertuin, or cloister gardens, of Kloostergang, the 14C cloisters that link the cathedral to the chapter house.

From the topmost gallery (465 steps) of Domtoren, there is an immense and magnificent panorama over the town and the province of Utrecht, the Netherlands.
